JEE Main 2027: Exam Pattern, Syllabus and a Month-by-Month Plan
JEE Main 2027 explained for students and parents: paper pattern, marking, sessions, syllabus and a month-by-month plan for Class 12 and Class 11 students.
JEE Main is the gateway to the NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded engineering institutes — and the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, which leads to the IITs. Here is what students in Class 11 and 12 need to know for the 2027 exam, and how to plan the months ahead.
Note: NTA publishes the official JEE Main information bulletin each year, usually in October–November. The pattern below is the one used in the most recent bulletins. We will update this article when the 2027 bulletin is released — always check jeemain.nta.nic.in for the final word.
The exam at a glance (Paper 1: B.E./B.Tech)
| Details | |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-based test |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics |
| Questions | 75 in total — 25 per subject (20 multiple-choice + 5 numerical-answer) |
| Total marks | 300 |
| Marking | +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer (numerical answers included), 0 if left blank |
| Sessions | Two — January and April. You may take one or both; your better score counts |
Because every numerical question now carries negative marking, guessing is expensive. Accuracy matters as much as speed.
The syllabus
The syllabus covers Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, closely following NCERT. A useful way to see it:
- Mathematics: algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, vectors and 3D, probability and statistics. Calculus and algebra together carry a large share of questions every year.
- Physics: mechanics, electrostatics and magnetism, optics, modern physics, thermodynamics, waves. Mechanics and electricity are the backbone.
- Chemistry: physical, organic and inorganic. Inorganic and parts of organic are very NCERT-dependent — students who read NCERT line by line gain easy marks here.
A month-by-month plan for Class 12 students (2027 exam)
- October–November 2026: finish the remaining Class 12 chapters. Begin one full-length mock test every week.
- December 2026: revise Class 11 — mechanics, coordinate geometry, physical chemistry. Increase to two mock tests a week; analyse every paper.
- January 2027 (Session 1): treat Session 1 as a real attempt, not practice. Keep revision light in the final week.
- February–March 2027: board exams. Board preparation and JEE preparation overlap heavily — NCERT for Chemistry, derivations and theory for Physics.
- April 2027 (Session 2): a second chance to improve. Fix the weak chapters revealed by Session 1 and take timed mocks.
A plan for Class 11 students (2028 exam)
Class 11 is where JEE is won or lost. Almost half the syllabus is from Class 11, and it is the foundation for Class 12.
- Study every topic for understanding first, then solve graded problems — from basic to JEE Advanced level.
- Take a test every week and keep an error notebook.
- Do not postpone Class 11 chapters to "revise later". Gaps from Class 11 slow down Class 12.
Five mistakes to avoid
- Too many books. One good set of notes, NCERT, and previous-year questions are enough for most students.
- Mocks without analysis. A test is useful only if you spend as long reviewing it as taking it.
- Ignoring Chemistry. For well-prepared students it can be the most scoring subject — especially the NCERT-based parts.
- Skipping the board syllabus. Many institutes require a minimum Class 12 percentage for admission, so boards still matter.
- Guessing on numerical questions. With negative marking, a blank answer is better than a wild guess.
Preparing with TRIFOCUS
Our two-year JEE Main + Advanced program for Class XI–XII includes MHT-CET and Board preparation in the same plan, with batches of up to 20, a test every Sunday and a parent-teacher meeting every month. Mathematics and Physics are led by faculty from IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay.
Concepts. Practice. Progress.
